Yes, Schiit Modi Multibit 2 was a real DAC. Schiit launched it in December 2022 for about $299, then quietly removed it from the current range. Is it still sold in November 2026? No, at least not new from Schiit. The best alternatives are the Modi 5 if you want a small standalone Schiit DAC, or the FiiO K11 R2R if you want an actual resistor-ladder converter with a built-in headphone amp.

What Modi Multibit 2 actually was

The confusing name has a real history. Schiit introduced the original Modi Multibit in July 2016 for about $249. Its announcement described it as part of the company’s Multibit 2 platform, even though the product itself was called Modi Multibit. That platform name is one reason searches for Modi 2 Multibit and Modi Multibit 2 became mixed together.

A separate product officially named Modi Multibit 2 arrived on December 21, 2022. Schiit’s launch announcement listed an Analog Devices DSP-based digital filter, medical or defense grade multibit conversion, Unison USB, a selectable non-oversampling mode and a revised power supply. It accepted USB-C, optical and coaxial digital inputs and provided RCA analog output. It was a DAC only, with no volume control or headphone output.

The later product was therefore more than a casual nickname. Anyone selling a Modi Multibit 2 should be able to show that exact model on the case, manual or purchase record. Our full Modi Multibit review and replacement guide covers the older unit in more detail.

Is Modi Multibit 2 still sold?

Schiit no longer offers Modi Multibit 2 in its current DAC range. The company’s current DAC guide lists Modi 5, Mimir, Bifrost 3, Gungnir 2 and Yggdrasil. Modi Multibit 2 has no current product listing or order option.

Schiit has not published a separate discontinuation announcement that could be confirmed. Its past-products database lists the original Modi Multibit and Modi+, although the database currently omits the later Modi Multibit 2. Taken together with its absence from the store and DAC guide, the reasonable status is discontinued for direct retail sale.

A search for Modi Multibit 2 for sale now means shopping for used stock or an unsold dealer unit. Ask for photographs of the front and rear panels, confirm USB-C and the NOS function, and request the original 14 to 16V AC adapter. A generic DC adapter is unsuitable. Also check the purchase date and warranty terms instead of assuming a used unit retains factory coverage.

How the current Schiit names fit together

Modi+ was a conventional ESS-based delta-sigma DAC launched in November 2022 for about $129. It is now in Schiit’s past-products list. Modi 5 replaced that entry-level position in December 2025 and costs about $149 in November 2026.

The current Modi 5 product page describes Mesh conversion, which combines Schiit’s own digital filter with an ESS ES9018 delta-sigma modulator. Schiit rates THD+N at 0.0003 percent, signal-to-noise ratio at 118 dB and output at 1.5V RMS on USB power or 2V RMS with its optional AC supply. Modi 5 is therefore related to the Multibit line through Schiit’s filter work, while its conversion hardware is delta-sigma. Our Modi generation comparison has the full chronology.

Higher models have changed too. Bifrost 2 and Bifrost 2/64 used True Multibit conversion. The Bifrost 3 , in stock at about $699 to $729 in November 2026, uses a SHARC DSP and an ESS ES9039 delta-sigma modulator under the Mesh name. Schiit says older Bifrost 2 multibit cards remain compatible with the new chassis.

The Gungnir 2 is the current Schiit choice for buyers specifically seeking multibit conversion. It uses four TI DAC8812C converters and Schiit’s Multiform architecture, with prices around $1,549 to $1,599 in November 2026. That is a large jump from the former $299 Modi Multibit 2.

Buy Modi 5 if you already have a headphone amplifier and want the closest current replacement in size, inputs and Schiit ecosystem. It has USB, optical and coaxial inputs, fixed RCA output and much lower published distortion than the two resistor-ladder choices. See the current DAC shortlist under $200 for other compact standalone options.

Buy the FiiO K11 R2R if the resistor-ladder architecture and NOS mode are the point of the purchase. It also replaces a separate headphone amp. FiiO rates its RCA output at 2.7V RMS, line THD+N at about 0.025 percent and SNR at at least 115 dB A-weighted. Its headphone stage supplies at least 460mW into 32 ohms or 50mW into 300 ohms from the 6.35mm output, and 1,300mW into 32 ohms or 220mW into 300 ohms from 4.4mm balanced. A recent reputable outlet listed it at about $175 . The broader FiiO desktop comparison explains where it sits in that range.

Power, voltage and output impedance

Modi Multibit 2 and Modi 5 produce a line-level signal, so the connected amplifier determines headphone power and output impedance. The K11 R2R includes that amplification, which makes pairing math relevant.

Take the Sennheiser HD 600 as a demanding voltage example. Sennheiser specifies 300 ohms and 97 dB SPL at 1V. One volt into 300 ohms is 3.33mW, so the equivalent sensitivity is approximately 97 - 10 log10(3.33) = 91.8 dB/mW.

For 110 dB peaks:

Power = 10^((110 - 91.8) / 10) = about 66mW

Voltage = sqrt(0.066W x 300 ohms) = about 4.45V RMS

FiiO’s 50mW single-ended rating falls slightly short of that conservative 110 dB target. Its 220mW balanced rating clears it comfortably. For damping, the usual one-eighth rule gives 300 / 8 = 37.5 ohms. FiiO rates output impedance below 1 ohm single-ended and below 1.5 ohms balanced, comfortably under that limit. The HD 600 amplifier pairing guide covers practical gain and headroom choices.

What I would buy

Choose Modi 5 for a simple Schiit stack, low published distortion and a current factory-supported product. Choose the K11 R2R when you specifically want resistor-ladder conversion, NOS mode and an integrated amplifier. Consider a used Modi Multibit 2 only when the seller documents the exact model, condition and power supply, and the price makes sense against those new alternatives.
