First, the Honest Part: Do You Need Balanced?
Probably not — and it’s worth knowing why before spending the money. A balanced headphone output gives you roughly double the voltage swing of the same amp’s single-ended jack, which translates to more power. That is the entire real-world benefit on a desktop. The noise-rejection story that balanced connections are famous for applies to long cable runs between pro-audio gear, not to the two meters between your amp and your head. So the question “which balanced amp?” is really the question “do I own, or plan to own, a headphone that needs the extra power?” Three honest answers:
- You own a planar magnetic — a HiFiMAN Sundara , HE400SE , Audeze LCD-2 or similar. Balanced power is genuinely useful here. Keep reading.
- You own a 300Ω dynamic — an HD 600, HD 650 or HD 660S2 . These need voltage, and good single-ended desktop amps already deliver 3–4× what they require. Balanced is a nice-to-have; the 660S2 even ships with a 4.4mm cable so you can try it for free.
- You own IEMs or efficient closed-backs. Skip balanced entirely and put the money into a better DAC or better headphones.

Best Value All-in-One: FiiO K7 (~$149)
The K7 is the cheapest sensible entry into balanced listening because it solves the whole chain at once: AKM DAC, 2000mW amp section, and both a 4.4mm balanced and 6.35mm single-ended output on the front panel. There is no separate balanced DAC to buy, no interconnects, no stack. Plug in USB, plug in the headphone, done.
Into hard loads the balanced jack delivers the power that matters — FiiO specs 2W into 32Ω balanced — which covers the Sundara and HE400SE class of planars with room to spare. The single-ended jack remains excellent for everything else.

Best Dedicated Balanced Amp Under $200: Schiit Magnius (~$199)
The Magnius is the most affordable standalone balanced amplifier worth buying. It delivers 2.4W into 32Ω from its balanced outputs — nearly triple the Magni Heresy’s 0.86W single-ended — through both 4-pin XLR and 4.4mm Pentaconn jacks. That is enough for virtually every planar magnetic short of exotica like the HE6se.
The catch, and it’s a real one: the Magnius has balanced XLR inputs only. It needs a DAC with XLR outputs — the natural partner is the Schiit Modius ($199), and the budget route is the SMSL SU-1 ($79), which has XLR out despite its price. Factor that into the total cost before comparing it to the K7.
Buy it if you have (or are buying) a balanced DAC and want maximum power per dollar. Skip it if your DAC is RCA-only — for single-ended use the Magni Heresy is better value. Full review: Schiit Magnius .
Best Fully Balanced Amp: Drop + THX AAA 789 (~$299)
Most “balanced” amps are single-ended circuits with a balanced output stage. The THX 789 is balanced from input to output — separate signal paths for each channel and phase throughout — and it delivers 6W into 32Ω from its 4-pin XLR output with distortion that measures below audibility. Unlike the Magnius, it accepts both RCA and XLR inputs, so it works with whatever DAC you own today and upgrades gracefully later.
On sensitive headphones you will never touch that power. The point is headroom for the hardest loads and three gain settings to keep the noise floor appropriate across everything from IEMs to planars. This is the amp in my own balanced reference chain, and it anchors the best headphone amp under $300 list.
Buy it if you want one amp that will drive any headphone you’ll ever own. Skip it if your hardest load is a 300Ω Sennheiser — a $99–$199 amp serves it identically. Full review: Drop THX AAA 789 .
Budget Balanced DAC/Amp: iFi Zen DAC 3 (~$149)
The Zen DAC 3 is the warm-sounding alternative to the K7: a Burr-Brown DAC and a 4.4mm Pentaconn balanced output in a $149 desktop unit. Its amp section is less powerful than the K7’s, so it’s the pick for easier-to-drive headphones where you want the balanced connection and iFi’s slightly fuller presentation rather than maximum wattage — and its USB-powered convenience suits a small desk.

- ~$280: SMSL SU-1 (XLR out, $79) → Schiit Magnius ($199). The cheapest genuinely powerful balanced stack; add a $40 balanced cable for your headphone.
- ~$450: Topping DX3 Pro+ or another RCA/XLR DAC → THX 789 ($299). Future-proof for any planar; this is my own reference configuration.
