Overview

The Topping DX3 Pro+ ($149) and FiiO K7 ($159) sit in almost identical price territory and are both all-in-one DAC/amp combos targeting the same user: someone who wants to connect a computer (or multiple sources) and drive quality headphones up to the 300Ω range.

Both are excellent. The decision comes down to power requirements and form factor.

Sound Quality: Is There a Difference?

Both units measure near-identically in the areas that matter to listeners. The DX3 Pro+’s THD+N spec is lower on paper (0.00045% vs 0.003%), but both figures are well below audibility — at normal listening levels, you will not distinguish between them in a blind test on any typical headphone.

Both are transparent amplifiers. They add no meaningful coloration. The headphone’s character determines the sound; the DAC/amp is just the power and conversion stage.

Where the K7 has an audible advantage: very power-hungry loads. The HiFiMAN Arya, Audeze LCD-2, and similar planars benefit from the K7’s higher current delivery. The DX3 Pro+ will drive these headphones to adequate volume but with less headroom and dynamic authority.

Feature Differences That Actually Matter

FiiO K7 advantages:

  • Balanced headphone output (4.4mm): Doubles available power for headphones with balanced cables. The HD 600, DT 990, and most popular headphones don’t include balanced cables, but aftermarket balanced cables exist for all of them.
  • More power: 1500mW vs 900mW into 32Ω. Meaningful for planars and power-hungry loads.
  • RCA input: Connects to additional analog sources (turntable with phono preamp, CD player, game console with RCA out).
  • Higher output power overall: Better headroom across all impedance loads.

Topping DX3 Pro+ advantages:

  • Remote control: Adjust volume from your listening position without touching the unit.
  • Smaller form factor: Takes up less desk space.
  • Lower measured THD: Marginally better measurements on paper (not audible in practice).
  • Slightly lower price (~$10 less).

Headphone Compatibility

Sennheiser HD 600/650 (300Ω)ExcellentExcellent
Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro (250Ω)ExcellentExcellent

For the majority of headphones — especially anything in the 150–300Ω range — both units perform identically. The K7’s power advantage becomes relevant only with planar magnetic headphones or unusually demanding dynamic drivers.

Which to Buy

Buy the Topping DX3 Pro+ if:

  • Your headphone is 300Ω or less (HD 600, DT 990, AT headphones, most IEMs)
  • Desk space is at a premium
  • You want a remote control for volume
  • You don’t need balanced headphone output
  • You want marginally better measurement specs

Buy the FiiO K7 if:

  • You’re driving a planar magnetic or other power-hungry headphone
  • You want balanced headphone output now or in the future
  • You need more input options (RCA for additional sources)
  • You want the stronger long-term pairing as your headphone collection grows

If you’re currently using or planning to use a Sennheiser HD 600, HD 650, or Beyerdynamic DT 990, either unit is equally excellent. Buy whichever is on sale or available faster.
